What do you need in order to review a file?
The claim number and carrier, the carrier's estimate, your own estimate, photographs supporting the scope, and the declarations page if you have it. Not all of that is essential to start — a claim number and the two estimates are enough to say whether appraisal is worth considering — but a complete file is reviewed faster because nothing has to be chased.
Does submitting a file commit me to anything?
No. A file review is an assessment of whether appraisal fits, not an engagement. If it does fit, the scope and fee are quoted before any work begins; if it does not, you are told that instead. Nothing is raised with the carrier and no position is taken on the claim on the strength of a submission.
How long does a file review take?
A reply comes within 24–48 hours, and a considered view usually follows within a few days of the file being complete. Large or multi-building losses take longer, because the scope has to be read rather than skimmed. If a deadline is running, note it in the submission and call as well.
Is what I send treated as confidential?
Yes. A file is reviewed for the party who submitted it and is not discussed with the carrier, the opposing appraiser or anyone else on the claim. If the same claim later arrives from the other side, the conflict is declined rather than worked around.
